About Our Classes

The goals of CMAP's training and education programs are to educate and provide training to individuals and nonprofit organizations in the use of various media tools and techniques; and to provide individuals and nonprofit organizations with access to various media tools and assistance in their use. We offer regular classes in a wide array of digital media production tools and techniques.

  1. The first class in our introductory series is usually Field Production. In this class you learn the basics of cameras and how to check out cameras from CMAP's equipment library.
  2. The next class for most producers is editing. We offer editing classes for both PC and Mac users, and specialize in making professional production software enjoyable and easy to use.
  3. Our three workstation editing lab is fully equipped to start right away on editing your project. We have brand-new iMACs with large monitors for you to use, and will soon have 1 terrabyte drives for members to use.
  4. Our studio class is also held regularly. In this class, you synthesize nearly all of the skills learned in other courses to utilize our studio facility.

CMAP Orientation (mandatory for new memebrs):

If you are a resident, business, non-profit, government agency or individual in Hollister, Gilroy or San Juan Bautista please contact us for an orientation about how CMAP can help you access the media on cable television and via the Internet!

Cost: FREE!! 

Field Camera Class (certifitcation to use CMAP's equipment):

This class teaches CMAP members how to use our user-friendly, high-definition cameras, tripods and accessories.  Learn the basics of set-up and composition and how to record both on-set and in the field.

Editing with Final Cut Pro

Learn the basics of editing: capture media from a camera, position markers, adjustments for video and audio, effects, transitions and make your own DVD!

Cost: $30 for CMAP members; $40 for non-members.

Class Outline:

 

Lighting Class

Simple and creative lighting tricks and an introduction to advanced lighting for interviews and green screen shooting. (Create your own super cool backgrounds!)

Claymation

This is a hands-on class in which we make stop-action animated movies with clay. You'll learn about animation techniques and the program iStopMotion, as well as the basic storyboarding, script-writing, lighting, working with clay and shot design techniques required to make a short movie in two hours! 

Cost: $30 for CMAP members; $40 for non-members + $10 materials 


Digital Storytelling Workshop

In a two-day workshop, participants create a multimedia, personal story that is illustrated with still and/or video images and narration recorded in CMAP’s audio booth. Using creative writing exercises, participants will learn techniques to craft a compelling script into a 2-minute individual, family or oral history piece.

Cost: $40 for CMAP members; $60 for non-members. 


Studio Producer's Class:

If you have an idea that would make a great TV show, but are not sure how to make it happen, this class is for you. Learn how to organize and manage your media resources to bring your ideas to life. You will learn basic terminology and technical skills needed to put together a show, including how to manage a crew and check out CMAP video equipment for your show. You will also learn how to use CMAP's brand new Tricaster 40 studio technology which includes robotic cameras and green screen virtual sets.

Cost: $75 for CMAP members; $100 for non-members. 

 

Audio Class

If you have a great video project, you need great audio to go with it. In this class you will learn all the basics of good audio recording and editing. Learn to do high quality voiceovers, use wireless microphones and put together a loop based audio track using Apple Soundtrack or Garage Band. 

Cost: $30 for CMAP members; $40 for non-members. 


Internet Basics for Parents

Tired of your kids "tweeting," "friending," and "facebooking?" Or, are you still wondering what the heck these terms mean? Learn how to talk with your tween or teen about internet safety. Also, understand how these websites can benefit your social networking--connect with old friends and family, learn about new things, or market your personal brand, business or non-profit organization without wasting time!

Cost: $20 for CMAP members; $30 for non-members. 


Dynamic Google (Online Resources for Non-Profits and Businesses

In this class, CMAP staff can help you use online tools to create calendars, evites, discussion groups, marketing surveys, questionnaires, collaborative online documents that help make work more efficient, get group decisions made faster, and get more people involved.

Cost: $30 for CMAP members; $40 for non-members.


Social Networking/Marketing with Video 

Work with social networking sites and tools to broaden your organization’s reach. Market your personal brand, business or non-profit organization without wasting time! Learn the ins and outs of using video and youtube to reach new audiences.

Cost: $30 for CMAP members; $40 for non-members.

 

Super User Pass

Gain intensive, personalized instruction with James Duisenberg, CMAP’s access facilitator, or other staff to receive hands-on project-specific support to power through your video production or audio project. Speed up your progress, learn secret tips and tricks, and get the expert help you need!


CMAP staff will come up with a plan for your specific multimedia training needs. Receive up to 7hrs of intermediate, hands-on training from CMAP’s talented staff each month. Passes can renewed on a monthly basis.  


Must reserve in advance; private instruction is not guaranteed. Private tutorials are available at $50/hr in addition to the Super User monthly pass cost. To be eligible for this program, you must be a CMAP member in good standing, and have taken CMAP’s core classes at least one time: orientation, camera, studio, and Final Cut Pro. CMAP’s operations manager reserves the right to determine eligibility and prior experience criteria.
